Samuel L. “Sammy” Jacobs
Former Latrobe Clothing Store Co-Owner

Samuel L. “ Sammy “ Jacobs, 88, of Latrobe, the oldest active tailor in Westmoreland County, died Saturday, Aug 5, 2006 in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital.

He was born Feb. 13, 1918 in Mount Pleasant , a son of the late Jabur and Faye (Ghantous) Jacobs.

Mr. Jacobs, working out of his residence in Latrobe was still very active in clothes alterations for his repeat customers and flag restoration for the American Legion, VFW and other organizations. He was extremely proud of working with and restoring the U.S. flags for different veterans associations.

He moved to Latrobe to work for Kennametal Inc. of Latrobe, where he was responsible for inventing many carbon-based tools that are in use today by the mining industry. He later left Kennametal to join the family business.

Sammy, as called by his numerous friends, was former co-owner of the J. Jacobs’ clothing store in Latrobe with his father, Jabur, his two brothers, Ernest and John, and his sister Genevieve “Gen”, where he learned his alteration skills. They had two stores located on Ligonier Street and on store in Mount Pleasant.

After Latrobe’s downtown renovation, his store was purchased by the borough, and he consolidated his store located across from the library in downtown Latrobe. After the death of his father, Jabur, and brother John, he and his sister Gen ran the business for many years, serving the Westmoreland County residents and providing uniforms for nurses, the many school districts and clubs in the area.

He was a graduate of Ramsay High School in Mount Pleasant and was a life member of the Tony Angelo FOE Aerie 01188 in Latrobe.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Coral Atkins Jacobs, two sons, Robert T. and David R. Jacobs, a brother, John Jacobs, and tow sisters, Ida Yesbak and Betty Donnelly.

He is survived by three sons, John A. Jacobs and wife, Elaine, Daniel J. Jacobs and Sam W. Jacobs, all of Latrobe, a brother Ernest Jacobs of Mount Pleasant; a sister, Genevieve “ Gen “ Sopcisak of Latrobe; six grandchildren, Scott A. Jacobs, Jodi L. Groba, Mathew C. Jacobs, Jennifer Alexander, Michael Jacobs and Mark Jacobs, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

His sons would personally like to thank his nieces Nancy Betz and her daughter Tina Girt and Phyllis Sheehy for making his last days comfortable.

Family and friends will be received 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 PM Tuesday in John J. Lopatich Funeral Home Inc., 601 Weldon Street, Latrobe.

Services and interment are private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Latrobe Volunteer Fire Department Communications Fund, 1 Main Street, Latrobe, Pa. 15650
