No mercy for jammer of cops' radios

November 1, 2005

MILWAUKEE --
The U.S. Supreme Court refused Monday to consider an appeal from a man who was sentenced to eight years in prison for jamming Madison police radio frequencies.

Rajib Mitra, 27, from Brookfield, was convicted of interfering with emergency communications during the 2003 Halloween weekend -- a time of hectic police activity because the holiday draws thousands of people to the city -- and on Nov. 11, 2003.

Mitra's attorney Lew Wasserman said people in other parts of the country have done similar crimes and the Federal Communications Commission usually only gave out a civil violation.

Prosecutors said Mitra, a former University of Wisconsin-Madison student, knocked police radio transmissions off the air by broadcasting a strong tone on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 on the system's control channels. He also piggybacked pornographic sound snippets onto the ends of police transmissions on Nov. 11.
