GOOD MORN'

Why is it that Police in District 4 do not kid around with the 911 dispatchers like the Police do at Districts 1, 5 and 9 ? Around the 11 PM hour all hell breaks loose especially in the district 5 and 9 police departments. There isn't a minute that goes by that I don't laugh at one thing or another. It’s better than watching TV most of the time and it’s always better than listening to Classic music or Debbie Boone.

The guys in 4 are so serious you would think that Court TV was on and Roger Rabbit was on trial for stealing a carrot. They need to loosen up a bit, you know… laugh and crack a joke now and then. They could take a lesson from 50 !

I know Police Business is SERIOUS and to prove that, as soon as there is a wreck, domestic call or anything that warrants a police call, the jokes stop and the trained officer takes over.

Currently I have enough audio collected to make up a funny and interesting .mp3 for everyone to listen to by cutting and pasting audio clips. Yeah ! That’s the ticket. One clip for sure that I hope I can find is when Motorola jumped on the airwaves and began giving instructions to the Police when 911 went down (CRASHED) ! Gee, I knew Motorola was a big name and all but I didn’t think they were so big that they could give the police orders. The Police listened, so there you go… and just think, I had an opportunity to work for Motorola way back when I was just a small wart hog.

SCOPE

The scope has been down (computer so police can look up license numbers, wanted criminals and bad people) since 5 AM and won't come back on line until 11 AM. Hard to believe the state doesn't have a back up system. The scope is one of the police's biggest tools. On a traffic stop the police could have someone pulled over that is wanted on a felony and wouldn't know it with the scope down.

With all the taxes we pay in this state it's hard to believe that we just sit back and take a lot of this stuff sitting down. Remember that the next time you drive over a pot hole !

KCABDEEF

I recently received an email from a “WALT”, within that email was a few very nice comments and I would just like to say Thanks ! All feedback is welcome whether it be good or bad. You see, I read all the good emails. The bad ones I email to Scotty J.

Operating and enjoying Amateur Radio along with listening to the scanner is what takes up most of my day. With Westmoreland County 911 switching over to 800 Mhz I have made this scanner listening thing more of a priority.

In fact, I’ve made listening to the Westmoreland Co. System my BUSINESS.

You see I have been in radio one way or another for most of my life, so I wanted to make sure the County did it right. That, along with the friends that I’ve made in Law Enforcement helps me know what I know, if you know what I mean. Most of the cop buddies that know are retired now except for a few here in the city, a few outside the city, and those that email me now because of this blah-g.

What I was getting at before you rudely interupted me was

· I know how this system is suppose to work
· I also know things are suppose to be

Some things with this system just don’t jive and I’m keeping BOTH EYES on it. After all I helped pay for it with my tax dollars. It is seriously in this BOOGERS opinion that Westmoreland County would have been better off with a 400 Mhz system. We have too many hills and dales around here for 800 Mhz and the 39 or so repeaters that Motorola had to put up is proof.

This area was perfect for the low and high VHF systems that we were using for the last 2,000 years however there is only so much you can do on 33.70 Mhz and 154.740 Mhz. Moving to 800 Mhz would have been PERFECT if we lived in OHIO. Flat land, ya know. I'll keep my eyes open as I said.

I have a message for Westmoreland Co., I need one of those mobile / base radios here to test. Just program it for full access and please advise as soon as Staley Communications can deliver one. Oh, and don't forget to mount one of those expensive beam antennas (yagi) on my house too !

If you see or know of something going on with the new radio system that isn't quite right, let me know. I am still hearing of "dead spots" within this Westmoreland Co. System. One such LARGE dead spot is in the village of Wilpen, home of Fire Station 45.

HOW YOU CAN SAVE MONEY WITH YOUR SECURITY SYSTEM

Ok, so here is another subject I am an expert at. Honestly !

If you have a monitored security system installed at your home or office then you are paying anywhere from $29 to $49 a month for your monitoring. How do I know this, because I was in that business for years.

Now here is something for you to choke on. The security company, whether it be Westec, Guardian, Rampart, Greiner or Any Company USA only pays about $2 (two dollars) a month to have you monitored at a National Central Station located somewhere else !

New paragraph. $2 (two dollars) to monitor you and you pay $39 on an average !! That’s $37 dollars profit per each customer. DID YOU KNOW THAT ??

So, pick a company, doesn’t matter which one. If they have, say 500 customers, they MAKE a profit of $ 18,500 per month OR $ 222,000 a YEAR. Good money, huh.

Why am I speaking out on this now… who knows. Maybe I found a soft spot for those with alarm systems. I don’t feel bad as I always charged at least $20 less then the big guys. I was charging $9.95 when others were $29, and $19 when others were $39. The overhead isn’t there so most of that money is pure profit. Remember I’m a retired security specialist now and poor.

If you have a monitored alarm system, check with other companies before signing your next yearly contract. Instead of paying the $39 that you do now, try and talk them down to at least $20 as they would still be making $18 on you each month. Don't let them tell you they can't, BELIEVE ME they can and do.

You can even find a dealer out of state that will do your monitoring dirt cheap if you check around. Try Google ! Programming the newer systems is super simple. Even an adult can do it! Most of the newer ones are “remotely programmable” meaning anyone can reprogram your system with the proper software and your passcode.

Ok, I’ve done my part. Now you can save or pay, up to you.
