GOODBYE ARNOLD EMS - STATION 101

BACKUP IT UP
FLASH
RADIOS ARE NOT TOYS

So yesterday we had 455.5, and I’m wondering what was learned.

What is 455.5 you ask ? Why that’s one half of 911, and that is what we had.

The Western half of Westmoreland County’s brand spanking new MULTI-MILLION dollar radios system went down, boom bang fuztixzzzzzzpoof.

Emergency radio transmissions for half the Westmoreland County Area were either cut off or severely reduced and it took almost 24 full hours to get the system back up and working !

Da... bibity bibity bibity bibity bibity (fingers moving up and down over my lips).

I was listening to Staley Communications throughout this whole ordeal and at no time could I tell there was sweat running down anybody forehead.

For that matter it didn’t sound like anyone at the department of whatever broke a sweat either except the dispatchers !

Credit must be given where credit is due. The DISPATCHERS (even Bill) all deserve a round of megaplause during this county emergency, Good Job Man !

For the layman sitting at home drinking his or her Coca-Cola and watching reruns of Dallas, the sun came up and the sun went down. But for those county employees that rely on radio communications to perform their jobs it was a different story. Hardest hit (only because there were no fire calls during the BIG CRASH) were the POLICE.

Two way communications to a police officer is probably just as important as their weapon ! I don’t think they would want their Glock to jam just a I don’t think they would want their radio transmissions to go unheard.

I can hear it now.

10-13 10-13 Officer Down ! (dead air) CAR 6-99, REPEAT. (dead air)

That is why I say not only to the cops in the field, but to all fire department personal and EMS public servants… TEST YOUR RADIO AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR SHIFT ! I used Car 6-99 only because that car does not exist in the Westmoreland County System. I would not wish that fate on anyone. BUT IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED !

Let me get slightly technical. For all of you that use these 800 Mhz radios, when you transmit to the 911 center you are transmitting on a frequency somewhere around 809 to 820 Mhz. NO ONE MONITORS THOSE FREQUENCIES except a machine called a repeater. If that repeater goes down, no one is going to hear you. Got it ?

If you stand one foot away from your fellow officer and you each have a radio turned on to the same channel (talkgroup – TG) and the 911 system goes down, if you press your push-to-talk button your fellow officer WILL NOT hear you ! The cars will not hear you, I WILL NOT HEAR YOU. You are in DEEP Shite !

Now do you see why it is so important for 911 and Staley Communications to have a back up communications system in place for when a little storm comes through and goes boom. THEY DO NOT ! AND YOU NEED TO GET ON THEIR RESPECTED ASSES.

(I am sticking up for the little folk that use these 800 Mhz radios ! Do you think that is why Mark and Richard, who supervise the Westmoreland County radio operations, are not returning my calls ? That is my guess ! I have placed several calls into the 911 center with questions and for comments. I even spoke to Mark once and he promised to return my call and go over these issues however his return call that he promised me has gone by the wayside. A few more days and I’ll have a couple of Bad Boogy Awards to issue !)

TARGET

What a nice way to follow up on a CRIPPED RADIO SYSTEM, TARGET Stores !

This kind of information makes my skin crawl and my blood boil, just like yesterday. If you have a moment read the information below. If you are busy then try to remember to come back to it soon and read. Either way, make SURE you read the last item in today's issue of the BOOGERS BLAH-G, at the bottom.

Highly Recommended Reading From The Booger !

Subject: Target Stores?

Amazing Issue with Target Stores.

If they have a good sale in their ads, take the ad to Wal-Mart, where they will meet the price.

Dick Forrey of the Vietnam Veterans Association wrote."Recently we asked the local TARGET store to be a proud sponsor of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall during our spring recognition event. We received the following reply from the local TARGET management:

Veterans do not meet our area of giving. We only donate to the arts, social action groups, gay & lesbian causes, and education.

"So I'm thinking, if the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and veterans in general do not meet their donation criteria, then something is really wrong at this TARGET store. We were not asking for thousands of dollars, not even hundreds, just a small sponsorship for a memorial remembrance.

As a follow-up, I E-mailed the TARGET U.S. corporate headquarters and their response was the same. That's their national policy.

Then I looked into the company further.

They will not allow the Marines to collect for 'Toys for Tots' at any of their stores. And during the recent Iraq deployment, they would not allow families of employees who were called up for active duty to continue their insurance coverage while they were on military service.

Then as I dig further, TARGET is a French-owned corporation. Now, I'm thinking again. If TARGET cannot support American Veterans, then why should my family and I support their stores by spending our hard earned American dollars and to have their profits sent to France.

Without the American Vets, where would France be today?

Feel free to pass this along to whomever you want.

Sincerely,
Dick Forrey

Booger Now...
Now I am not suggesting that you do your shopping at Wal-Mart stores. In fact I suggest that you SUPPORT your LOCAL STORES whenever possible. I am seriously recommending that you DO NOT SHOP AT TARGET !

VENTURA HIGHWAY ?

Scotty J. was making his secret 50 mile daily walk in disguise today (was dressed as a mobile antenna) and saw a radio maintenance vehicle at the Latrobe Volunteer Fire Department.

He said the lettering on the van said VENTURA COMMUNICATIONS. I have never ever heard of that company, are they from Florida looking for better weather ?

I thought I knew all the radio maintenance companies but I guess I was wrong. Scotty J. told me they were getting on a ladder to go up on the roof ! Secret Ventura Antenna ?

It is my guess that either one of the few radio companies left in this area have either changed their names or it is a newer company trying to make a living off of stealing Motorola customers ! Don’t laugh, I took over many Motorola customers in my days of being radidio mainmenace because Motorola (Staleys now in this area) just plain charges tooo much !

I could go in and repair a customer's radio system in a hour or two and end up charging the customer $40 - $80 dollars whereas Motorola wanted $120 just to come in and “look” at the problem. It was easy getting Motorola customers to say good-bye and switch over to me. Put it this way, I had food on the table and always drove new cars !

VENTURA, whoever you are, Good Luck !

ARNOLD EMS STATION 101

As I mentioned in yesterdays Blah-g, Arnold EMS – Station 101 signed off the air for good on 6 JULY 2005. They are CODE-40.

All residents that relied on this excellent company for service should now call 911 should you need a medic or ambulance.

Station 101’s last order of business was to announce that they are CODE-40 over the radio. I was lucky enough to record that announcement and have made it available for all to hear, download, and save.

I’m telling you, this Blah-ger was shocked and saddened by the announcement. Although I never needed their professional caring service, I’m sure glad they were there in case.

Please see my new audio web page where you can download the different audio .mp3 files that I am posting. These files are actual “on the air” recordings of our 911 system that feature your local cops, firefighters and medics. These files require Windows Media Player or equivalent to listen.

The Arnold Station 101 closing audio is the next to the last file listed and is called Arnold101.mp3. The file is presented exactly as recorded without protection. Feel free to use it anyway you wish.

The direct link is: www.k3sam.com/800/AudioClips.html

As of right now this is the ONLY location that link is located. GMan will most likely place it on his website also but I AM JUST TOO BUSY RIGHT NOW KEEPING THE COUNTY RADIO SYSTEM UP AND RUNNING !

I should have a link posted on my http://800.k3sam.com/ site soon.

Goodbye Arnold One Oh One.

// // // // //

That’s it for right now – I do have more though… you’ll just have to wait !

Usually I throw in a bit more humor into this here BLAH-G, but lately with the system being down and knowing that 911 has taken MILLIONS of OUR DOLLARS and built a radio system that will CRASH during a thunderstorm, I’m a little bit subdued.

BACK IT UP 911, BACK IT UP !

DECODED,
K3SAM
